Carl Sandburg 1878-1967 - Swedish-American author
"Fog" is one of Sandburg's most quoted poems. On his way through Grant Park in Chicago, he had observed the fog by the lake. He wrote the poem on a slip of paper while waiting to make an interview for a newspaper article. Carl Sandburg came into this world on Januray 6, 1878, in a small cottage in Galesburg, Illinois. As the son of immigrants from Sweden, he learned to speak Swedish. His father, August Danielsson, born September 28, 1843 in Bötunga, Åsbo parish, near Mjölby in Östergötland, had emigrated in 1869. The mother, Klara Mathilda Andersson, born July 20, 1850 in Lilla Östergård, Appuna, Östergötland, left Sweden in 1873. The two met in Illinois. Pastor S. P. A. Lindahl married them in Galesburg August 7, 1874. The father is listed as August Sandberg in the membership records of First Lutheran Church in Galesburg, and the mother as Klara Andersson. The parents read their Swedish bible, and the family attended church regularly. Carl was confirmed in Elim Lutheran Church in Galesburg
