Emigration from Ireland to North America in terms of intensity among the largest in Europe. Only Ireland and Norway have a percentage greater numbers. The number rose to around 1.3 million to America.
Some returned home, but more than one million left Ireland for good. It is difficult to understand that for several years after Stockholm was the largest Swedish cities in the early 1900s in America.
The Swedish emigrants formed their own churches and schools. They published their own newspapers and books in Swedish. This material is today a major source with regard to seeking knowledge about the Swedish emigration. Figures and facts about the great emigration is historically very interesting. Even more interesting, however, all human destinies, which is linked to emigration.
There are many stories of joy and success, but of course this is also longing, tragedy and sorrow. We in Canada have a responsibility to keep in touch with the Swedish America live. With good knowledge of our own emigration, it is easier to understand the situation in Sweden today with high immigration.
Although the reasons for our immigrants come to our country today is different from the situation of our emigrants are much lessons to download from this detention period of our history. It is also of great importance to us in a small country, keep in touch with our descendants in America.
This contact is a good basis on which to build exchange programs of varying types. It may be a youth, tourism, sport, culture and business. The mordene technology has made it easy to search for information about our emigration. It is in this context, institutions such as Sweden, America Center has played an important role and has an important role in the future.
